The 3 things to know
Take a tray and order at the counter
Pick up a tray and order your udon at the counter. Water and tea are free.
Grab tempura before the register
If you want tempura or onigiri, take it before you get to the register, not after paying. Anything you pay for has to be picked up before the register.
Add free toppings after paying
After you pay, go to the self-service area for the free condiments, such as green onion and tempura flakes. Return your tray at the end.
Quick answers
Can I add tempura after I pay?
No. Take tempura before the register, because it is something you pay for. Only the free condiments are added after paying.
Are green onion and tempura flakes free at every udon shop?
Not necessarily. This order of tray, order, pay, then free condiments is the pattern at Marugame Seimen and similar shops. Layouts and which condiments are free vary by shop.
