The 3 things to know
Pull tab 1 down and all the way around
Pull the tab marked 1 down and around the rice ball.
Pull one side of the wrapper off
Pull tab 2 to one side.
Pull the other side off
Pull tab 3 to the other side. Don't pull 2 and 3 together, one at a time is the key.
Quick answers
Why does the nori rip when I open an onigiri?
The film keeps the nori away from the rice until you open it. Tearing the film from the top, or pulling both side tabs at once, makes the nori stick and rip.
Do all onigiri use the same wrapper?
No. This is the standard packaging at the large konbini chains, but some brands and regional packs differ. Rolled or non-triangular shapes may not use the 1-2-3 order.
What happens if I open it wrong?
Nothing serious. The nori just tears or sticks.
